• HTML
  This skill goes almost without saying. You cannot expect to get by if you do not have some sort of understanding of HTML, and therefore how the web itself works. Find a course teaching the latest version of HTML software, as it never hurts to be as up-to-date as possible.
• CSS
  A big part of what a web developer does is power the designs created by the web designer. While CSS is not vital to web development work, having more than just a basic understanding of the language will help your application development interact better with the design, making for a more comprehensive website over all.
• Widgets
  Over the last few years, the way web development has traditionally been done has been changed by the introduction of widgets. These applications have allowed data to become more interactive and even portable, and many well-done widgets will even go viral (increasing the amount of brand exposure a company has). For successful web design in widget applications, knowledge of Flash or Java is needed.
• Flash
  While many people hate Flash, the reality of the situation is that many of the people who want websites love it. Using flash in the web development process of a project will allow you to create attractive applications that are highly interactive. A developer can use flash programming in anything from videos, to navigation, to widgets.
• Platform-Specific Applications
  Social networking websites, such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, have opened up their platforms. The companies behind the iPhone and other smart phone technologies have also recently made it possible for access their platforms. Developing applications for these kinds of portals can work out to be highly profitable and as the concept is so new, developers proficient in platform-specific applications are highly sought after.

These are not the only web development skills that are going to get you noticed, but they are some of the most sought after and useful. When looking at what skills you would like to learn or improve in, always look at what is currently in demand and focus on a skill that will enable you to do just that.
